July 2006 News

July 2006

Welcome

We are pleased to welcome Roger Drury to our group. Roger has offered his services as Asst Beaver Leader and will be joining us in September. Please make him welcome.

Roger lives near Winchester, but works in Romsey- so will be helping at Beavers on his way home from work.

Broadstone Beckons

Two patrols of four Scouts are attending the Troop Summer Camp at Broadstone Warren at the end of July. Camp booklets have gone out containing full details of programme, menu, kit lists etc.

They also include a camp permission/health form which must be returned before the camp. There is also a sheet for parents to pull out and keep with contact details during the event.

The Scouts will be travelling in Leaders cars, and we are grateful to parents Will Bull and Anelli Pacheco who have offered to drive the hire van with all the equipment.

Camp report next time.

Explorer Evening

The Explorers had an evening of raft building and canoeing in June.

We are also currently training and testing Scouts from Eling Sea Scouts for BCU and we have a river trip on the Hamble on 9th July.

Diggers Day

This was a water activities day open to Scouts and Guides throughout Romsey District and tool place on the very hot Sunday, 2nd July.

We provided canoeing, Jon from 21st brought his rowing boat and Howard from 6th brought raft building equipment - including a homemade “dragon boat”.

It was a really enjoyable day- and everyone was glad to get a soaking from the fire tender that turned up to practice pumping water from the lake and spraying it back over the lake!

As the take up was lower than expected, it was opened to Explorer Scouts one week before the event- and one of our Explorers took part. None of our Scouts took part- which was their loss.

It may seem a long way off, but plans are well underway for a big camp at the New Forest Show Ground next summer to celebrate Scouting's 100th birthday. Details will be out early in September for Cubs, Scouts and Explorers but make a note of the date in your diary - 29 July to 4 August.

Beavers will be invited out for a day visit on 1st August.

Gift Aid

A Reminder from Marion, our Treasurer

For every £1.00 paid in subs, the Scout Group can claim back 22p from the Inland Revenue. On its own that may sound meager, however collectively over the year this can equate to nearly £600.00.

As you can see, Gift Aid is a vital part of fund raising for the group.

A Gift Aid form is supplied when your Son/Daughter joins Scouting and should be signed by the Income Tax paying parent/guardian and returned to their section leader. If you haven’t sent in your form yet, don’t worry, it’s never too late to sign up as we can claim retrospectively.

Membership

All sections of our group are open to boys and girls. If you know someone who would like to join us, tell them to contact Pat Leggett on 023 8041 0946 or by email to:waitinglist@northbaddesleyscouts.org.uk

AGM (After German Mayhem!)

Having decided to cancel the circus skills and BBQ because England were supposed to be trouncing Portugal - we still needed to hold our Annual General Meeting. It was put back to 7 o’clock in the hope that the match would be over by then - but in the event we didn't get started until nearly 7.20.

Fortunately we had 21 people present - 1 more than our “quorum”
of 20, so we were able to proceed. It was a short meting, at which
our ex-Chairman Chris Parsons was presented with a 10 year
service certificate and the “Medal of Merit” for his services to
Scouting in North Baddesley and Romsey District.

We were also pleased to present gifts to the following Members of
our group for their continuing services:

  • Pat Leggett Secretary
  • Marion AlcockTreasurer
  • Robin T-M Quartermaster and Assistant Explorer Scout Leader.
(Also recently appointed District Explorer Scout Commissioner)
  • Kate Moore Beaver Leader
  • Ann Bourne Asst Beaver Leader & Canoe Instructor
  • Vince Leggett Group Supporter - who does a lot of work behind the scenes
  • Peter Donnison Archery Instructor
  • Kate and Peter were not present, so are being given their gifts separately.

The Executive committee was reelected with the existing membership. However, we do not have any parents on the Executive representing the Beavers or Cubs. If anyone is interested in helping to support the Group on the Executive please contact your section Leader or Pete Bourne (GSL) on 023 8073 2038.

Scout Activities

Caving and Climbing Day 13th May

Tim, Simon, Emily, Kate, Ben, Murray and Thomas all enjoyed this day trip based near Wells. The morning was spent caving in Burrington Coombe, at the challenging Goatchurch Cavern. The afternoon was spent climbing outdoors at Split Rock near Wells. We spent about three hours here with one or two abseils before heading home.

Village Day

Village day was a success despite the clash with the football! Interest was received from numerous parties and help was not short at hand from the scouts. Thanks to Karen (Cub leader)
and her Mum for anchoring the stall.

Next Issue
